Symptoms and Treatment of Acid Reflux

Many of us will be only too familiar with some of the symptoms of acid reflux, they're mostly the same as general heartburn or indigestion. You know, you suffer a burning, stinging or similar sensation in your the area of your breastbone.

While can also be caused by structural abnormalities, thus distinguishing itself from the infrequent heartburn symptoms that nearly everyone experiences at some point in his or her life, many of the same methods of treatment can be used to alleviate or stop symptoms altogether.

One of the first areas to consider is the foods that you eat. One of the best ways to get a grip on this, although time consuming, is to keep a food diary; the information that you discover could play a big part in controlling your problems.

First off, just write down everything that you eat and also the time you eat it (this latter requirenment is important). Next time you have a bout of heartburn, refer to your food journal and see which foods you had eaten right before the symptoms showed up, and note what time of day it is.

It's well-known that certain foods, e.g. high in fat, spicy etc. can trigger acid reflux; maybe you can see a pattern in your diet that is producing your reflux problem. You may be able to stop your heartburn suffering simply from avoiding the foods that tend to trigger your symptoms. I would try to rule out food culprits before turning to drugs.

Though many and heartburn drugs are touted to alleviate some core, underlying issues with the consequent result of curing your heartburn symptoms, the truth is they are primarily about the same thing that most pharmaceutical drugs are about: treating symptoms, not root causes.

Let's face it, over time, heartburn drugs are probably not going to do much for your overall health not to mention any damage that your stomach or esophagus may have suffered. When we turn to supplying the body with only clean foods and water it can be surprising just how capable it is of healing itself from so many different diseases. Of course, if there is a structural problem, then tis needs to be addressed, but the drugs won't help you with that either.

Also, eating foods known to trigger your may be better tolerated when eaten earlier in the day, or at least, not immediately before bed. Bedtime seems to be prone to the most occurrences of heartburn, and this may well be because we are lying down, so gravity no longer works in favour of keeping our gastric juices in our stomach. Some vitamins and other nutritional supplements are also known to trigger in many people, so it's a good idea to take these in the morning time or a couple of hours before retiring if this is you.

The best advice I can give you is to start keeping a food journal, and not just to help you solve your problem. Besides learning to avoid foods that add to heartburn discomfort, over time you'll notice other things that can help you improve your quality of life, such as which foods make you feel good and give you lasting energy, and even foods and drinks which produce a satisfying calming effect.
