Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux

Although there are many different approaches to natural remedies, the one principle underlying all "natural" remedies is that of allowing the body to heal itself. The idea is to reinforce and augment the body's natural healing abilities by making sure it has plenty of the basic requirements it needs, including water, sleep and food, the simpler the better.

It naturally follows that the first and simplest way to deal with is to eat clean and natural foods. If we eat a lot of high fat and dairy foods, especially if they're highly processed, we're making our digestions work harder. But chocolate, tomatoes and herbal supplements are also known to bring about heartburn-like symptoms, particularly if you eat them just before you go to bed. Eating foods rich in nutrients and low in processed ingredients that only hinder natural bodily processes give the body the best chance to snap back from sickness or discomfort.

Likewise, clean water, and lots of it, detoxifies us, allowing our body to remove the waste products that are produced by the processing of food. Although we eat food to gain energy, the truth is we cannot utilize all elements of the food we consume. That's why it's important to drink plenty of water to allow the body's circulator and limbic systems to collect and remove waste from the body's cells.

Sleep is also a critical factor in keeping us healthy. Only during the deepest stages of sleep does the body produce its most effective growth hormones. It's these hormones that are responsible for the miraculous healing and restoration that we take for granted during our life. Eating a heavy meal just before retiring is asking for trouble, not only because it can produce acid reflux, but also because by producing a disturbed, poor quality sleep it decreases our ability to heal prior damage.

Beyond good eating and sleep habits, there are some natural herbal supplements that can help alleviate symptoms and even root causes. Just like with pharmaceutical medicines or any drug, keep things simple and try not to mix too many drugs, because as mentioned earlier, some are known to cause heartburn-like symptoms.

For example, simple peppermint has many digestive system supportive traits. It aids the body in digesting food by encouraging the secretion of digestive enzymes. It relieves upset stomach of various kinds and tastes pretty good too. Why do you think restaurants give out peppermint candies on your way out the door?
